VISITING little Pakistan ( in Birmingham, UK)

20130521-112243.jpg

The women and their children said they were born in Birmingham and carry on with their culture and traditions which is important to them. The British are tolerant and embrace other cultures but they wish other cultures will embrace theirs. FAIR POINT and not much to ask. A country that gives much and receive little. Where else in the world you find a country like this?

“Many British Pakistanis have established highly successful businesses and belong to middle class lifestyles. However, British Pakistanis also have the second highest overall relative poverty rate in Britain, after British Bangladeshis.[12] A large number of British Pakistanis are self-employed, with a significant number working in the transport industry or in family-run businesses in the retail sector. The demographics of British Pakistanis have changed considerably since they first arrived in the UK. The population has grown from about 10,000 in 1951 to roughly 1.2 million today” text by wikipedia

The number of women wearing the burka and niqab has exploded in Britain in recent decades.

burka

Yasmin Alibhai-Brown has described this as follows: “It started 20 years ago with the hijab, donned then as a defiant symbol of identity, now a conscript’s uniform. Then came the jilbab, the cloak, fought over in courts when schoolgirls were manipulated into claiming it as an essential Islamic garment.”

AD4RJ2

We must consider therefore what the future will bring. It could be argued that banning this garment will reduce the numbers wearing it – both now and the future – and that is a result I would welcome. If we cannot ban the burka for the women who desperately want to rid themselves of it, or in solidarity with women the world over who risk their lives to fight against this sartorial prison, perhaps then we can do it for their daughters?

20130709-145121.jpg

In her wonderful book ‘My Forbidden Face’, Latifa – a young Afghan girl -wrote:

burka_graduation

“In order to look behind me, I have to turn around completely. I can feel the rustle of my own breath inside the garment. I’m hot. My feet get tangled up in the material. I’ll never be able to wear this. I now understand the stiff robot-like walk of the ‘bottle women’, their unflinching look directly in front of them or fixed rigidly on any unsuspected obstacle. I now know why they hesitate for so long before crossing the street, why it takes them an eternity to walk upstairs. These phantoms that now roam the streets of Kabul have a terrible time avoiding bicycles, buses and carts. It’s even worse trying to run away from the Taliban. This is not a garment. It is a mobile prison.”

Do we stand with Latifa and oppose the burka? That is the real choice that we all need to make.

The French Hospitality

20130514-102603.jpg

Children, parents and grandparents are together all times here in France

People say we are lucky, all we can say is we loved the hospitality we received here in France, from when we arrived in Paris, our cousin Monalisa’s flat with champagne and hugs and kisses than meeting her Parisien friend Brigitte in her flat, meeting our english friend William and his freind Scott in St Germain to my new french friend Aline that took me to meet her family in Paris. I may be missing more people and the group of 48 brazilians that were visiting Paris too. Toulouse we met the best of France and Portugal…we miss Toulouse and our friends! 20130502-002208.jpg

Madame Hayet a brazilian lady, Michael and their daughters spoke portuguese
was like being home as Martin also speaks portuguese fluently!

Well, in Pau we made a new group of friends from Maelle, the writer to Claudine and Salma who were absolutely the hostesses with the mostess until we met the Hayet family:

Image 1Michael, Vanderlani and their belle filles! The Hayets hospitality goes beyond description. The long wooden table all decorated by the girls of the house had all the greatest food!

The highlight was the Home made Fois Gras! For those that don’t know the best Fois Gras is the organic ones made in local farms in that region of Southern France. We learned that Fois Gras in Paris you will probably eating from the can unless you are in one of those very special Michelin Restaurant which cost a fortune!20130514-092349.jpg
We felt the priviliedge and apreciate all that gourmet dinner and the wonderful company of our friends.

To close these 8 months in France, while we went to Bordeaux we stooped in Bassin de Arcachon where The Many Famille lives ( Valerie’s parents).

20130514-101018.jpgIt was an amazing surprise that Valerie came all the way from Toulouse to meet us!

20130514-102057.jpg

In Bassin de Arcachon there was an Classic Vintage Car Fete and plenty sunshine

20130514-100922.jpgIn Bassin de Arcachon we met Olivier and he invited us for dinner…oh lala! That was lush as Thomas says.

20130427-222220.jpg Again, a huge solid wood table set up and decorated for the degustation of his homemade feast: faisson pate, wild boar pate, Tomate and legume bouillon, champignon cepe omelette avec Oussi Fromage and Pays Basque delicatessen for desert with a Assiette de Fromage.

20130514-093232.jpgValerie took us to visit the Oyster Farms and to eat fresh fruit de Mer. She showed us the region and there is nothing better then visit with the local residents … They know all the best places to go which turists don’t get to visit!

Well this trip has been amazing as we were guided by French friends and had their company all the way? Priceless…20130514-100030.jpg

DRINKING FROM THE FOUNTAIN OF MIRACLES in Lourdes, France

20130509-130140.jpgI believe in Miracles! I had many happened in my life. Some people say I have a very strong faith. Here in Lourdes Martin and I had an amazing, formidable spiritual experience in every way from drinking the healing waters o meeting amazing devoted catholics. This post will be in portuguese for those that can’t speak english.

IMG_0837

TODAY IT IS ALL ABOUT YOU!

20130425-005759.jpg

How are you?

What do you want in your life?

What are you doing to make it happen?

What is stopping you to get where you want to get?

11176_469123426476186_621445502_n

Recently, I was invited to do a talk about what I think of the situation of crisis in Europe. I had no qualification apart from my own views.

I realise that here in France as in England, or should I say United Kingdom ( we still are!) many expect the government to MAKE MIRACLES but few believe in it.

People blame government for everything which it is sad…what kind or people are we if we vote for politicians but don’t believe in them but go with the flow… slugging them off.

I just can’t believe that people don’t seem to understand something so simple straight forward:

There is no money, rien, nient, nada! We all have to do what we can and God help us ALL!

This is not the first time this happen in Europe …have we all forgotten?

My ancestors had to leave “Europa” in the past to go to Brazil because they could no longer afford to live in Europe. They did not WANT TO LEAVE THEIR COUNTRY,THEIR HOME, their people, but they had too…and they did in order to survive. To do better.

And they made it!

Like my family there were too many others that left Europe to USA, Canada and other far way lands.

My grandfather once said:

“Ignorance is rely on others to look after yourself such government and institutions”

“Socialism can not be sustained when there is no money” said many socialists in the world.

Captalism is not sustained either! There are other ways.

20130425-015142.jpgSTEVE JOB said something like:

“Your time is limited, so stop wasting living other people’s life”

We have to find our own way without expecting from others what we are not prepared to do for ourselves!

Many of us can not afford to retire yet. In order to be able to live the life we want we have to work and save for our old age. That is what our parents did and all our ancestors before them. THEY PAID THEIR WAY. WE PAY OUR WAY…and C’EST LA VIE MON AMI!

Now you can work and have fun….

…we brazilians are good at that. I find that many people here in South France found a way around work and pleasure too. We know people in UK that found a good balance too. In France and Spain they take the siesta very serious…no apologies at all!

You can have your cake and eat it! But there is always a price to pay.

My husband and I could live anywhere in the world but we like Europe. We love England and now France. WE ARE PREPARED TO PAY THE PRICE.

HOW ABOUT YOU?

PS. please comment in the blog instead of emails as everyone can connect and participate. If you want to keep it private it is fine too just keep the juices going…CIAO
