Cefalu, piu bela!

Since we arrived in Sicily people tell me…you need to visit Cefalu!
20140413-192958.jpg

We went by motorbike all the way from the auto-estrada de Falcone to Capo Orlando then off by the gorgeous coastline…arrived in Cefalu, we then knew we were in for a treat!
Cefalù, a refuge, a peaceful and a sanctuary of religious inspiration. A city of history and a culture pot of so much missed cultures, Cefalù’s origins are surrounded in mystery. “Mentioned in ancient times over the ages by Pliny, Strabo and Ptolemy as simply a pleasant Sicilian town, the aroma of this charming city hangs enigmatically in the air of ancient history. Fascinating!”

As soon we have parked the Bike we met a group of locals and had a great chat. One of them told us… You need to visit the “lavatoio” that is where by great grandmother and my grandmother washed all the family clothes.

the fresh water that still flows here in the LAVATOIO since the arabs comes from the rocks….

the fresh water that still flows here in the LAVATOIO since the arabs comes from the rocks….

It was a battle, and the sacking of the great city of Himera that drew Cefalù out of the shadows of obscurity into the light of historical fact and gave it a role. Refugees from the Greek Himera, flying for their lives from the King of Carthage, found a safe place in this secluded spot surrounded by mountains, and hid. So the city came into its own as a place of protection. Over the years this theme was to be affirmed. Cefalù grew as a commercial town at the base of this head absorbing into its makeup the characteristics of its various Roman, Byzantine and Arab rulers.

The city developed further when Roger II extended the city further up the hill towards its “head”. In this expansion project, he respected the older Roman street map and town planning, which have remained to this day, as have parts of the old Roman walls which stretch right down to the seashore. He also constructed the awesome Norman Romanesque Cathedral in 1131, around which a myth of salvation grew up.

The story goes, that lost at sea in the midst of a violent storm, desperate to survive, he made a pact with the Almighty that if God spared his life he would construct a fine cathedral in his honour and in gratitude for his life. He survived, and duly built the church. This theme of gratitude and miracles is also present in the city’s shield, depicting loaves and fishes.

Montalbano Uni di Borghi Piu Belli d’Italia.

20140329-203439.jpg
<br /
Montalbano is considered One of the most beautiful places in Italy!
I arrived there when the Town was resting but as soon I arrived an Italian man noticed I Was a tourist and came to say hello introduced himself and offered to show me the "Storic Centre". He also invited me for coffee. I am used to it by now and gently said thank you and explained I liked to explore no my own to take as much time as I needed. He then invited me for coffee… No wonder why Italians are só famous! They don't take NO for answer but I am expert in dealing with them by now … Lots of practice but I must say… Its part of their culture they say what they want when they want it… Why not?
It Made me reflect on this text below I Read by Lee Marshall.

"Reflecting on his native Sicily in a 2001 interview, late-starter novelist Andrea Camilleri, who was 69 when he began writing his bestselling Inspector Montalbano novels and short stories in 1994, talked of the fascinating diversity of an island race that other Italians too often dismiss, he says, as “anti-social bumpkins”.
Sicilians, he pointed out, “carry the blood of 13 different occupying powers. The result is that we have the intelligence of true bastards, their vivacity, richness and cunning”.
This richness informs every page of Camilleri’s books: it’s there not only in the restless, smart, inconstant, gourmandising character of his main character – a cultured cop whose ingrained scepticism proves invaluable in his line of work – but is refracted and reflected in the gallery of friends, family members, work associates, mafiosi, witnesses and victims that he encounters along the way."By Lee Marshall10:42AM BST 06 Sep 2013
How about that? Well, the Montalbano I visited today it was a Medieval Hill Town with its uniqueness and special charm….
Just 30 mins away from Falcone Seaside Town.

20140329-203548.jpg
That impressive view draws you into its Historic Centre and as soon I managed my way up the Piccoli Vicolos I met Mima ( Domenica) while she Was sitiante in her terrazze combina her dark Black hair and smiles to me. We clicked and became friends trying to have a conversation , just about when she introduced me to Elvira … And that Was how we got this picture of us…

20140329-204155.jpg
Than Mima showed me around her house and along the way we found the Iglesia

20140329-204439.jpg

20140329-204538.jpg
NEXT Door to Mima lives Elvira. She has a house to sell and asked me to post her Contact if anyone in the world wants to buy a Stone House to refurbish. She said they just changed the Roof and insulated the property. It has Planning permission for a two bedroom house I think. We had all the conversations in Italian so don’t Quote me on that but here is her Contact as I promisse her.

20140329-205106.jpg
Mima made me promiss I will be back to have coffee with her before I went to the Uffizio de Turismo to meet Angela.

20140329-205258.jpg
Angela was lovely and gave me só much information. She told me to hang around if I wanted to see the Medieval Castle inside, she had a Group previously booked for 5:30 Pm. Today is saturday and I could wait why Miss this great opportunity?
Angela made a telefone call and soon Enzo Ruggero arrived. It turned out he was all dressed up in a Police Municipal uniform. He Was the guy to meet.
Angela organized the meeting and Enzo kept me company while the Group of tourists arrived. Enzo (as most Sicilians) was so hospitable, invited me to the only coffee shop opened to meet Verônica. I had a capuchino and Dolce di Montalbano ( they are not very good in accepting no) I had no say in that… Oh well, delicious the Dolce was. Verônica was very keen in helping me to Practice Italian teaching me new words. I am so sorry I forgot to take pictures of Angela, Enzo and Verônica but I have to go back I promissed Mima I would go back to visit her and here this is a serious matter.
Time to visit the Castle inside but it turned a bit foggy. Here are some of the fotos I managed to take. What can I say? Had a lovely time with lovely people. Arrived there alone and made new friends. Than as I usually do got inside the Piazza’s Iglesia to pray and thank God for another lovely day! Cant wait to come back to Montalbano with Mr. Gooda.

Randazzo.
“This Little Town In the 13th century had its own army, which fought in favor of the king against the rebels. In 1210 King Frederick II of Hohenstaufen and his young wife Constance of Aragon sheltered at Randazzo to escape the terrible plague which raged in Palermo.
Randazzo became one of the most densely populated towns in the island, after Palermo and Messina. ” by Wikipédia

I find this very interesting…
“The town was also divided into three main districts: the Greeks lived in St. Nicola’s quarter, the Latins in St. Mary’s and the Lombards in St. Martin’s.
During the Black Death of 1575-1580 the population of Randazzo declined. The economy slumped, and Randazzo almost turned into a ghost town.
During World War II, Randazzo was bombed by the Allies, destroying or damaging 76% of its buildings.”

Again Once I drove to its Historic Center mama mia la belezza … Lots of American tourists I met with Randazzo family names looking if they still have long lost ancestral conections.
I stoppped for a drink before I had to hit the Road again … Alone!

Luis Albisague poet and writer ( poeta e escritor Português)

Desde criança imagino histórias.
Since i was a child I imagine histories
Cheias de sonhos e de fantasias.
Full of Dreams and Fantasies
Tal tesouro guardava-as na memória.
treasure kept in my memories
Esperando partilha-las um dia.
Waiting to share them all One day

A vida seu caminho percorreu
Life follow its way
E eu como tantos outros cresci
And like all the others I did grown up
Sem conforto e sem nada de meu
Without comfort without nothing that I was mine
Mas essa esperança não perdi.
But these hopes I did not lost!

Segui caminhos que jamais pensei followed ways I never imagined
Algum dia neles poder andar somedays could walk those ways
Mas já agora que aqui cheguei but now that here I arrived

Gostava de consigo as partilhar would like to share
Desejoso que aprecie esta conquista wishful that you appreciate it too
E tal como eu com elas se divirta. And have fun with them as I do…

They spend their days and bad nights

Reading from the book of life seeking

Something so drastic the walls of hell

Will fall away leaving love alone in the room

Breathe I chant from the other room

Making poems and writing lines

Breathe I yell into the sunset, breathe

For God’s sake, but not really for hers for yours

Is this swosh in and out over and over

Soundless unless it becomes labored then louder than thunder

Seeking escape, wanting it back, letting it go

Some nights I feel you entering the room sweetening

The air filling the dark lungs with your soft breath.
