Tyrant Tyndaris now Sanctuary of the Black Madonna!

This is the view of Tindari from our Camping site.

This is the view of Tindari from our Camping site.

Tindari is on the Top Hill of the suburb of Patti, in the province of Messina, first built by the tyrant Dyonisus of Syracuse (with the name of Tyndaris) as a colony and best known for its two main fascinating features: its sanctuary located on a hill rising at 180 meters above sea level and its white sandy lagoon brushed by the cyan waters of the Tyrrhenian sea.

20140302-121213.jpgSituated on the easternmost point of the hill, overhanging the sea, the Sanctuary of Tindari was built where the ancient acropolis was once located, and is dedicated to the Black Madonna of Tindari: the view is just breath-taking here, as the sanctuary overlooks the whole North-Western shore until Capo Milazzo. The beautiful lagoon can be also seen from here, but we highly recommend you visit it: a sandy strip of land surrounded by transparent water, perfect for a relaxing day at the beach, and overloaded with legends and mythology – one of the legends says that the lagoon was created when a pilgrim, who had reached Tindari in order to pray for the Madonna but then refused when she saw that the Madonna was black, dropped her baby into the sea: the Holy Mary is said to have raised that strip of land in order to save the pilgrim’s baby.

The archaeological area is also quite interesting (and not far from the lagoon): plenty of evidence from the ancient Greek colony can be observed here, from a splendid Greek theatre, still used as a set for shows and plays, to the basil and the city walls.Devotion to the Black Madonna has long existed in Europe. The various aspects of the dark-skinned Virgin Mary are considered miraculously powerful and are credited with having protected believers from such afflictions as earthquakes, pestilence, and the attacks of invading armies. Representations of the Black Madonna in European art depict her with a dark complexion but not “African” facial features; thus they are different from the religious images developed for local communities in Africa, Asia, and Latin America

IN SICILY, La BELLA ITALIA!

20140302-121636.jpg

Woke up with this beautiful view looking at the famous Tindari after panicking on our arrival… All good campsites were closed. Finally we found Camping Marinello in Olivere and Giovanni the owner could not be most hospitable and helpful …we knew we were in Sicily!

The crossing from Reggio de Calabria to Messina was just 20 mins but the price? Over 200 EUROS which is a rip off comparing with Channel Cross. However this is south of Italy and we have been told to double check prices all the time as they change also all the time…

20140302-121722.jpg

The roads from Naples to Calabria could be described as Just dreadful full of pot holes… But here in SICILIA they are quite good and the drivers much more relaxed! This is Sicily… Relax and enjoy the sea, sun and the friendly people… Mangiare benne.

20140302-121538.jpg
So far we have been in Milazzo were our friends live, Oliveri, where we already went to a nice Party last night with our Italo- Brazilian friends ( a group of 7 all together). It was great to see families with children dancing celebrating carnival with Confetti and Serpentina. A little girl danced around us full of joy! Wonderful welcome to Sicily Party!
Now we can start to taste the real joys and famous hospitality of Sicily. Our friends Rosely, Giovanni Jane , Renan, Gio and Shirley made our night!

20140302-125806.jpg
Our friends Rosely & Giovanni. We met in Norfolk 10 yrs ago and she is the reason we are in Sicily … Her passion for her home town of Milazzo where the couple lives!

Have you ever suffered from The Evil Eye?

20140301-115707.jpg

20140301-120423.jpg
<brhttp://coisasdeflorania.com.br is the Cultural Page of the town of Florania.

Today is rainy and I decided it is a perfect day to tell a story that few know and lived. Happened in a lovely town called Florania, in the countryside of The Sertao region of Serido in the estate of Rio Grande do Norte. Imagine one of those very small towns where all the families know each other. A city with wide streets, one square with gardens full of flowers all year round. The Church of St. Sebastian overlooks the square and the whole town. This town arose in the valley of the Sierra de Santana where our great ancestors were born. Florania is also known for the beautiful view of the Holy Shrine visited by people to thank the miracles… where miracles succeed miracles and joys and blessings there will never cease, as they say, as long as there is rain to fill the rivers and water reserves. It happened shortly after I returned from a season in Rio de Janeiro, I think I was 15 and I went to spend the winter holidays there. At that time the city was so much fun crowded of happy faces waiting its visitors.
There was only one bus a day and it arrived at the very end of the afternoon. It was the biggest event of each day and was a real euphoria of so many people. Some appear curious to see who had come to visit. But I believe that most would really come to welcome visitors with a certain pride that they were coming to see their town.
That was how I got here. When I saw my family waiting for me I was jumping for joy and soon we all hug and kiss. I was so happy to reunite with my family that I forgot about my luggage, was full of news to tell. It was so much to catch up that I would not even stop to breathe. I was always chatter box but this was an special occasion.
Later, I went to the town square to walk and hang around greeting everyone in endless joy. I have to explain here that the people of this town has a reputation to be the most hospitable and it's floraniense people to be receptive and friendly around visitors interested in exchanging conversation. I was full of energy answering all the questions, finally, hit the stop time of the electrical transformer that kept all the town lights on…. Time they all gather to sleep. Everything was new to me and endless rush to make time to have a glass of warm milk and homemade biscuits, brushing teeth, washing our feet and prepare to go to sleep. I have to explain here that my great aunt Ritinha who lived in the time of Slaves told me that one should always wash their feet before going to bed to avoid having nightmares. Until this day I have this habit, can't help myself.
I slept fine with the fresh mountain air of the Wild, but when I woke up Who said I could talk? I could not!
I was given pomegranate seeds and lemon tea with honey, was not the flu and did not feel any better. My Aunty Nitalia gave me homeopathic remedies … No results to have my voice back. Had to write everything down on paper. The day passed and another day has come, and nothing changed. My uncle and Aunty were sorry for me and told me to put my mind at ease, they knew someone special that could heal me. I said please no doctor! Soon enough they told me about Donna Maria Cosme, she was well known as a healer of everything and everyone. Always busy helping others.
With little time arrives Donna Maria Cosme with her air of one who knew how to cure all illness I can't explain how she looked at me but it gave me so much confidence of how seriously she said: Blondie my girl ( I was known as the little blonde girl since I can remember ) I know what happened, you have been the victim of evil eye. I was really shocked than I sprawled. She continued: yes, you got here full of joy and energy telling of your travels and the winds that brought you here, with these hairs full of golden curls bouncing like a young goat in the air my girl… Someone threw you the evil eye. My family asked if she will be able to talk again? Will do, but have to get homeopathic treatment and stay a few days at home.
All I remember was Donna Maria with some branches of plants, which were plants with homeopathic powers, which focused very serious blessings and prayers holding me and throwing hands towards the open doors throwing the evil eye away, I had so much faith in it I believed it was going back talking and did everything right as she told me to.
And is not that the same day I got my voice back? Since then I started to have a respect for D.Maria I had never had nor by priests, nor by doctors. She told me a secret that I keep with me until today: anyone has the power to heal as long as you can believe and do with a good willing heart. That lady was very wise, she changed my way of thinking and made me believe I can bless my children, husband and who want to be blessed. Nowadays people study to learn what d.Maria Cosme knew within herself and I can not tell how many people she helped in her lifetime. I've always been grateful to her and I was in habit of whenever I went to the beautiful Florania I asked her to bless me. She used to have a wisdom smile those that only people like her can….she used to say worry no more that from the evil eye you do not suffer anymore.
You no creo in brujas pero que las hay, las hay! in Mexico and many other Latin cultures they believe in Evil Eyes.
Since I wrote this article in memory of Donna Maria Cosme for her family in Florania it was First page in Palop news a newspaper that has readers from all countries that speaks Portuguese.
Recently I heard that people shared the link and this article is travelling the world now.
I invite all my readers to google Florania to see how beautiful it is. I have been asked to write more about the Rain Showers of Joy by its residents… Something like Magic when you live in a very dry region that Rain is itself a miracle.

Woke up with this view in Capua

20140224-070637.jpg
We arrived In Santa Maria Capua Vetere. Stayed overnight in an Area Sosta and this morning woke up with this view…we are the only tourists here.
The remains of the second largest Roman amphitheater in Italy, after the Colosseum, dating from the 1st century AD. The remains are in much poorer condition than the Colosseum or the amphitheater in Pozzuoli, though some conservation work seems to be underway. A few of the more than 80 arches surrounding the structure remain standing and you can get a look from above at the “playing field” and some of the underlying passages, though presently you cannot visit either.
There’s a small antiquarium on the grounds with displays on gladiators (many of the training schools for gladiators were in this region) and some stonework from the site. More decorative stonework can be seen in a small park on the south side of the site.
The site is open daily except Monday from 9:00am to dusk, and admission is 2.50 Euro. There’s also a small Mithraeum nearby which can be visited by asking at the ticket window of the amphitheater. We can’t wait…
Now we are hitting the road to Caserta passing by Naples to arrive in Pompei!! Can’t wait!

IN ROME TO SEE THE POPE

20140221-131937.jpg

I have seen the Pope! It was amazing!
We went to the Vatican paid 85 Euros for both Martin and I with a great Tour Guide. I know it is expensive but it was worth every cent.
You will love to hear the history of how Michelangelo painted the Sistine chapel and how the frescoes where in 3 D in those days! Unbelievable!
20140221-125936.jpg

That was not just my dream! It was my great aunt Ritinha, my grandparents, parents and I believe all the catholic community in the world’s dream… To see the Pope in Rome.
We were so lucky in our visit to the Vaticano that we ended up not just visiting with our son Andrew that came from England but also we had a visit with a special Tour Guide which gave us a Class History of the Vatican,

20140221-125721.jpg

20140221-130132.jpg

Our guide took us to the Vatican Museum to see the Etruscan mummy and recently they discovered by DNA that the Etruscan people were from Tuscany indeed!
To make things more interesting you can’t believe our luck.
Been my usual me talking to people I meet … among some English we met in a restaurant we met a lovely lady Heather and it turned out that she was in Rome to see the concert of St Francis college from UK. Her daughter was playing in the concert and guess what? We got an invite.

The next day we had an amazing surprise we seen the Pope and watched and heard the concert. Words can not describe it.
Now that we have seen most of everything ( We could live here) we are leaving for Pompei tomorrow and then going to Sicily to see our friend Rosely Califanni. I will meet our my cousin that will come from Paris.
The weather is great it feels like summer!
We feel lucky that we closed our visit to rome with golden keys after seen the POPE! I know now why he is already an ICON!

BEST PIZZA IN TRASTEVERE, ROMA? Meet Tiago Ricci

20140213-123143.jpg

20140213-123018.jpg

There are Pizzerias all around you in Rome but we found Pizzerias Nerone by chance. We tasted many pizzas and started to get a bit bored of them. We were walking in the Streets of Trastevere ( the Saint Germain dês Pres. De Paris, Soho of London) when we passes in front NERONE PIZZARIA.
What called our attention was the sound of Brazilian Portuguese by two brazilians chatting their with huge smile on their faces. My son Andrew said she is going to talk to them , too late she is talking to them. That’s my mother cant see brazilians together without going to say hi!

This time Andrew was happy I did! I found out that the guy was a Qualified Pizzaiolo ( Pizza Masters Chef) By Nápoles the homeland of where Pizza was Created! He was very humble as most brazilians I meet are. He invited us to come and try his Pizza. Few days later was Andrew’s Birthday and after a tentativa of going to the Time Elevator ( a 5 D film of the Evolution and Ancient Rome ) he was ready to eat a Nice Pizza washed out by Chianti Clássico his favourite wine.

Tiago Ricci was there to welcome us with a warm “olá tudo bem com vocês?”
Meaning hi is it all good with you? Yes! Now even better he did recognised us! Brazilians are masters in Making you feel like an old friend. It is not false, it is in their culture. If you meet two brazilians talking for the First time you get the impression they are old friends. They Bond nearly instantaneously specially when they are in a foreign country! It is just the way they are.

Narone PIZZARIA is Simply decorated with typical checked table Cloth more like a Tratoria and it but the Pizza is amazing! We found a Unique selection where you can choose half of Pizza Parma Ham, Percorino Fromagio & rúcula and the other half Napolitana. Thiago also makes Pizzas Brazilian way Banana & cioccollata One half pannacota and strawberries the other half. Yummy! This is worth a visit to Trastevere and as soon Mr. G arrived in Rome we went for more. He loved! The Price? Very reasonable, trust me we are on a budget! I think everyone here in Europe is nevermind the Italians!

The interpreter Stefano Tamburini ( English – Italian)

20140327-135555.jpg

We met Stefano Tamburini while I was in the Mercedes dealership to do the service for our smart car.
We were struggling to speak to the Mercedes customer service and as by a miracle this guy pops in and asks “can I help you?”
“I am an English–Italian professional interpreter and I can help you. You don’t need to pay me, I will do it just to help both parts as I can see you are struggling!
What a relieve! Andrew and I did not believe what we heard and this is Rome!
Amongst all these Italians, one that speaks perfect English! Perfect.
That was our lucky day!
Stefano did not just interpret for us.
He was so eloquent and well mannered that he guided us further through the Mercedes service area.
It turned out he drove from Ravenna to Rome by car and needed to check something that went wrong with his Vintage Mercedes.
We got along so well that we ended up in a Cafe in Trastevere (one of my favourite places in Rome) and chatted for hours.
Stefano has travelled and experienced a lot!
His enthusiasm and eloquence really impressed us and like a typical italian guy he was dressed really professionally like he was going to meet the Italian Counsil.
He travels to the countries/regions where English/Italian languages are spoken, watches films and soap operas, befriends native speakers, reads comic strips, newspapers, and novels etc. He is in particular conscious of terminology in different registers of speech.
You will hear more about him soon.
